How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description
6 minute read
Sending the same resume to every job is the most common reason good candidates hear nothing back. Tailoring does not mean rewriting from scratch: it means making your most relevant experience easy to find.
Step 1: List the requirements
Copy every required and preferred skill from the posting into a list. Note which ones appear more than once or near the top: those matter most.
Step 2: Map your evidence
Next to each requirement, write where you have done it and a result. Mark each one as a match, a strength, or a gap. Be honest: the gaps are what you address in your cover letter or interview, not something to hide.
Step 3: Use their words, for skills you really have
- If the posting says "stakeholder management" and you wrote "worked with partners", use their phrase.
- Spell out tools and certifications exactly as listed, since applicant tracking systems match words.
- Never add a skill you do not have. It will come up in the interview.
Step 4: Reorder and trim
- Put the bullets that match the top requirements first in each role.
- Rewrite your summary for this job title in two lines.
- Cut bullets that support nothing in the posting to keep it to one or two pages.
Step 5: Keep the format simple
- One column, standard headings (Summary, Experience, Skills, Education).
- No tables, text boxes, or images for important content.
- Save as PDF unless the posting asks for Word.
