How to Negotiate a Job Offer: A Step by Step Script

6 minute read

Most employers expect you to negotiate, and a polite, well prepared counter rarely costs you the offer. The key is to know your number before the call and to make the ask with reasons.

Before you answer

  • Thank them and ask for the offer in writing, including base pay, bonus, equity, benefits, and start date.
  • Ask for a day or two to review. This is normal and expected.
  • Research the range for the role, level, and city using salary sites, job postings that list pay, and people in similar roles.
  • Pick three numbers: your target, the figure you will ask for (a little above target), and your walk away point.

Make the counter

Lead with enthusiasm, give one or two reasons tied to the role, then name a specific number. A specific figure is easier to agree to than a vague request for more.

What to say on the call
"Thank you again, I am really excited about this role and the team. Based on my [X years] in [area] and the [specific result or skill] I would bring to [their goal], I was hoping for a base salary of [number]. Is there flexibility to get closer to that?"

If they cannot move on base pay

  • A signing bonus.
  • A higher bonus target or an earlier first review.
  • More equity or a faster vesting start.
  • Extra paid time off, remote days, or a later start date.
  • A budget for training, certification, or equipment.

Put it in writing

Negotiation email
Subject: [Role] offer

Hi [Name],

Thank you for the offer. I am excited about the role and the chance to [their goal].

Based on my experience with [relevant strength] and the market range for this role, I would like to ask for a base salary of [number]. If that is a stretch, I would also welcome a conversation about a signing bonus or [other item].

I am confident we can find something that works, and I am looking forward to getting started.

Best,
[Your name]

Keep it simple

  • Do not apologize for asking or explain your personal expenses.
  • Pause after you name your number. Let them respond.
  • Get the final terms in writing before you resign from a current job.
